New York State has set one of the nation’s most ambitious goals for transitioning to renewable energy. Empire Wind is playing an important role in that effort.
Equinor is developing the Empire Wind project as two parts. The first phase of Empire Wind was selected in New York’s fourth offshore wind solicitation (NY4) to deliver 810 MW of power to New York, enough to power over 500,000 homes and is currently under construction.
Equinor is also developing the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal, as Empire Wind’s hub for assembly. Once operational, the port will be used as the operations and maintenance base, as well as a functional port for other projects.
Equinor has an offshore energy portfolio that includes long term opportunities off both coasts.
Empire Wind phase two, the second portion of the Empire Wind lease area, has the potential to generate 1,260 MW of electricity.
Equinor is applying our experience in floating wind technology to the Outer Continental Shelf offshore California. The 2 GW lease, Atlas Wind, lies off the state’s Central Coast.
In August 2024, a federal lease auction was held in the mid-Atlantic. Equinor was the winner of an approximately 2 GW offshore wind lease in the U.S. Central Atlantic.
The Sunset Ridge Energy Center (10 MW/20 MWh) in Frio County, Texas reached commercial operations in 2025.
The Citrus Flatts battery storage project (100 MW/200 MWh) in Cameron County, Texas is under construction. The project is expected to reach commercial operations in 2026.
The NOVEC projects (80 MW/160 MWh) in Northern Virginia are under execution and are expected to start commercial operations in 2026.
The projects are fully owned by Equinor and operated by Equinor’s subsidiary East Point Energy.
