Geothermal energy is an option we are exploring through our research programmes. Equinor worked with our partners in the Iceland Deep Drilling Project, using our offshore knowledge to drill the world’s hottest geothermal research well at the end of 2016. The goal for the Geomagma project is to explore how high temperature water from deep reservoirs can be used in power production.
The drilling operation was completed at the beginning of 2017, and the well is now in a two to three-year test period, where the objective is to confirm reservoir performance, well integrity and power production potential.
Iceland has a unique position in geothermal technology, and we are working with world-renowned experts in this area. Direct transfer of experience from the oil industry has been valuable in realising the research project. The success of the drilling campaign was helped by experience from our explorations business, our drilling and well teams, as well as our health, safety and environment experts.
