Statoil subsidiary Alliance Gas in the UK has won a place in the final of a competition to crown the energy company with the best overall marketing campaign.

This contest forms part of the first-ever international Financial Times Global Energy Awards, which are being presented for 1999 in 12 categories. Alliance Gas has entered the marketing campaign category.

The London-based newspaper has previously handed out similar awards in other industries, such as telecommunications, food and drink, and pharmaceuticals.

Five companies have been chosen as finalists alongside Alliance Gas in its category. They are Southern Company Energy Marketing, Green Mountain Energy and Mid-American Energy Holdings of the USA, Gas de Portugal and Britain's Transco.

The results will be announced at the awards ceremony in New York City on 8 November.

Criteria for judging the best overall marketing plan category include effective targeting, intelligent use of the right media, how original and innovative the campaign is, and whether it yields results.

"The nomination of our Alliance for More Marketing campaign has recognised the effort undertaken to promote the company as a professional and knowledgable organisation," explains Alliance Gas managing director Sue Simms.

"It has also provided guidance to the buyers in allowing them to make an informed purchase decision which appreciates that price is not the only issue when selecting a supplier."
