Oil leak halted

January 15, 2006, 16:00 CET

A leakage from the piping system inside the utility shaft on the Statfjord C platform in the North Sea has been stopped.

When the leak was announced at around 14.00 on Sunday, all personnel without an emergency response role mustered to the lifeboats. Just over one hour later the leak had been stopped and the crew could leave the lifeboats.

The leak is not directly connected with oil and gas production from the platform and it was not considered necessary to shut down production as a result of the incident.

None of the 268 people on board were injured in connection with the leak.

The appropriate authorities have been notified of the incident.

Statoil, as operator for Statfjord, will also appoint its own inquiry team.
