Tom Melbye Eide (44) has been appointed as Statoil's new senior vice president for legal affairs.

He will take up his position in the second half of this year, reporting to chief financial officer Eldar Sætre.

"Mr Melbye Eide has a strong legal background, in addition to experience as head of the legal department of a large international company," comments Mr Sætre.

The new senior vice president comes from the position of chief legal counsel in If, the largest general insurance company in the Nordic region. He joined If in 1999 and held several leading positions, including head of the sea and energy business area. He previously held senior positions in the Storebrand group (1996-99), and he has been adviser for the Ministry of Finance (1993-96) and the Ministry of Industry and Energy (1992).

Mr Melbye Eide has a law degree from the University of Oslo (1985), a master's degree in law from Kings College in London (1990) and a management course from Harvard Business School in the USA (October/November 2005).

"I'm looking forward to working for Statoil and I see the job as a real challenge," he says. "The group is in an exciting phase, which includes increasing internationalisation. I hope that my background from Nordic and international insurance and financial activities will enable me to contribute to the further development of Statoil."

He will take over from Jacob S Middelthon (62) who is to retire at the end of this year.
