Nigerian president met Fjell

June 28, 2000, 13:30 CEST

The president of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo, met Statoil chief executive Olav Fjell at the group's head office in Stavanger on 27 June.

President Obasanjo is in Norway for the world's largest health, environment and safety conference – HSE 2000 – taking place in Stavanger from 26-28 June.

In addition to Mr Fjell, he met petroleum and energy minister Olav Akselsen and director general Gunnar Berge at the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate.

Statoil is involved in oil exploration off Nigeria, which forms one of the group's four core international assets along with Angola.

Together with its partners, Statoil has made a major Nigerian gas discovery which is currently the subject of commercialisation efforts.

The group operates blocks 217 and 218 off Nigeria, and is due to drill wells this summer on the Agbami-Ekoli and Bilha structures in block 218.

Work is also under way to prepare a Statoil application for the country's next offshore licensing round.
