Veslefrikk shutdown

August 8, 2000, 11:00 CEST

The discovery of serious corrosion damage prompted the shut-down of Statoil's Veslefrikk field in the North Sea on 4 August.

Affecting several of the separators on the B production floater, the problems were identified in connection with a planned maintenance programme.

Experts from Statoil's core team for inspection have arrived on board to survey the extent of the damage and to recommend corrective measures.

Operations manager Annas Bollmann in the Veslefrikk organisation explains that the corrosion has probably been caused by long-term intrusion of salt water into the insulation around the separators.

Repairs will be coordinated with modification work on the gas compressors originally due to be carried out this week and part of the next.

"The corrosion damage will undoubtedly delay us for a few days, so we may have to remain shut down until around 20 August in the worst case," says Mr Bollmann.

Veslefrikk's two platforms are currently producing around 40,000 barrels per day.
