New firewater pump for Statfjord

A NOK 75 million contract to deliver a new firewater pump to the Statfjord C platform in the North Sea has been awarded by operator Statoil to Fabricom.

Part of a major programme being pursued by the group to improve safety even further on its installations, this order includes an option for similar equipment on Statfjord B.

Fabricom’s scope of work includes planning and detail design, procuring equipment and pipe fabrication, reports Haldis Særsten, senior coordinator for modification and maintenance procurement.

In addition come structural modifications on the platform to accommodate the new pump and diesel generator, as well as installation and testing of the system.

“The new pump will have a larger capacity than existing units, making the firefighting system on Statfjord C even safer,” says Ms Særsten.

While today’s pumps on the platform deliver about 700 cubic metres of water per hour, the new unit can supply roughly 3,000 cubic metres.

The project is due to be completed in August 2005.

Statoil has plans to upgrade firewater pumps on all three Statfjord platforms, and to modernise and replace their detection and fire extinguishing systems.
