Two people were taken to Bergen’s Haukeland University Hospital with minor burns after a fire broke out in the crude oil facility at Statoil’s Mongstad refinery in western Norway. Starting at 01.10 in the morning today, 12 July, the blaze was extinguished after about two hours.
The crude oil section of the plant remains shut down, and it is too early to say anything about the causes of the incident.
Statoil’s crude oil deliveries from the Mongstad terminal to the market have not been affected.
In addition to the police investigation now due to take place, an in-house commission of inquiry will be appointed to identify the causes of the fire.
It remains too early to say when the crude oil plant can resume operation, but production in the rest of the refinery is continuing at more or less normal levels.
