The discovery is located in the central northern portion of block 31, some 415 kilometres north-west of Luanda, and about 12 kilometres to the south-west of the Marte field.
The Leda discovery was drilled in a water depth of 2070 metres and reached a total well depth of 5907 metres below sea level. The exploration well was drilled through salt to access the oil bearing sandstone reservoir below. The well was tested at a rate of 5040 barrels of oil a day through a 36/64thns inch choke.
Sonangol is the concessionaire of block 31, and BP is the operator with a 26.67 percent interest. Other licensees are Esso (25%), Sonangol (20%), StatoilHydro (13.33%), Marathon (10%) and TEPA (5 %).
