Helping flood defences

May 29, 2000, 10:00 CEST

A total of USD 210,000 to help fund flood defences in Venezuela is being provided by Statoil and the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

These funds will be applied to work by the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute on securing the Mamo River and its tributaries.

Venezuela was devastated by extensive flooding and landslides last December.

Statoil considers it natural to help safeguard and rebuild the areas affected, even though the flooding had no direct impact on its employees, says Berit Øyen, public affairs manager at the group's Venezuelan subsidiary.

"We all feel affected by a disaster in which 30-50,000 lives were lost," she says.
