President Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria is to attend the HSE2000 conference on health, the environment and safety in Stavanger on 26-28 June.
Ranked as the world's largest HES meeting for the oil industry, this event is organised biennially by the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE).
Statoil serves as principal sponsor for this year's conference, which is the fifth in the series and should attract 1,200-1,500 delegates from almost 50 countries.
Under the slogan "progress through sharing values", the meeting aims to develop a fruitful dialogue between representatives from the UN, the European Union, international oil companies, environmental organisations and unions.
This event represents one of the most important programmes on issues which are becoming ever more central for the oil sector and industry in general, says Stig Bergseth. He is Statoil's senior vice president for HES and chairs the HSE2000 steering committee.
"Norway and Stavanger deserve full credit for getting the meeting held here," he says. "The Norwegian public and private sectors have much experience and expertise to contribute.
"But this also provides a very good opportunity to get updated and to learn from others."
President Obasanjo will be meeting Statoil chief executive Olav Fjell during his visit to Stavanger.
