We have been present in Mexico with a representative office since 2001. After the opening of the energy sector in 2013, we have been pursuing attractive business development opportunities in the country.
In December 2016, blocks 1 and 3 in the Saline Basin were awarded to a consortium consisting of then Statoil, now Equinor, (33.4%), BP (33.3%) and Total (33.3%). Equinor is the operator of Block 3, while BP is the operator of Block 1. The blocks cover an area of about 5,650 square kilometers in a largely unexplored deepwater area. The partnership is currently working on maturing the assets.
At the same time, Equinor is evaluating future opportunities in Mexico.

The winning bids for blocks 1 and 3 presented by Equinor and partners consisted of an additional royalty of 10% (on potential future revenues) and an additional work programme equivalent to 1 biddable well per block. Each block also has a minimum work programme as defined by the authorities, including a variety of geological activities but no required wells.
