Facts about Projects of Common Interest

Projects of common interest (PCIs) are key cross border infrastructure projects that link the energy systems of EU countries.

They are intended to help the EU achieve its energy policy and climate objectives: affordable, secure and sustainable energy for all citizens, and the long-term decarbonisation of the economy in accordance with the Paris Agreement.

Project timeline

The BaltiCO₂Net infrastructure will be realised in stages. Various partnerships are working on progressing capture at emission site, onshore transport, offshore transport and offshore storage.

Development of the storage site is planned in two phases:

Phase 1: The operational launch of the Project, which is expected to take place with the first CO₂ injection in Q4 2029. The target is to reach up to 6 Mtpa of CO₂ injection.
Phase 2: In the second phase, the ramp-up is set for a final capacity of up to 12 Mtpa by Q4 2034 (subject to ongoing reservoir evaluation process).
