FIRST® LEGO® League & Equinor

FIRST® LEGO® League is one of the world's largest technology and knowledge competitions for children and youth. This year, the competition celebrates its 25th anniversary, which we believe deserves both applause and attention. We have been fortunate to be part of the team since the beginning, and we want to continue – because we support and believe in what FIRST® LEGO® League stands for.

Equally important is our belief that both society and business will needmore of the curiosity, creativity, ability to collaborate, and interest in STEM subjects that FIRST® LEGO® League inspires. Because each year, tens of thousands of teams from over 100 countries collaborate to solve a challenge related to a theme within science and technology. Using robots, programming, and their own ingenuity, they have to come up with solutions to various problems.

In other words, the competition isn’t all that different from what we at Equinor do every day. Each day, 24,000 employees go to work to search for better solutions—often with the help of robots, programming, and their own minds, among other things. Through collaboration in science and technology, we work every day to accelerate the energy transition, but we’ll need more bright minds and skilled hands in the future to solve these tasks. That is why we sponsor FIRST® LEGO® League.

From play to process engineer

Silje works as a process engineer at Equinor and represents a new generation of problem-solvers – people who combine expertise with free thinking. For her, technology, strategy, and creativity come together in a single workday.

Her first encounter with coding came through FIRST® LEGO® League. There, she discovered the joy of exploring, building, and solving problems – experiences she now brings directly into her work as an engineer.

Inside the principal’s office

Eirik’s office is probably the most unusual in the country. Between rockets, planes, and LEGO constructions stand the proof of a school culture where curiosity thrives – and where STEM subjects shine. It’s hard to imagine anyone dreading to walk through that door.

How it started – and how it’s going

Full of drive and great ideas – but without a single instruction manual – it was Per-Arild who kicked it all off in 1999. Since then, FIRST® LEGO® League has grown to become one of the world’s largest knowledge competition for children and youth, with a clear goal: to spark interest and mastery in STEM.

Can four Equinor employees solve a challenge?

We gave the challenge to four of our employees, who usually work on some of the largest and most technically challenging projects in the energy transition. In just four hours, they have do their best to solve up to six tasks with the robot. They would need to program, build, and coordinate, and most importantly: collaborate.
