On May 15, 2018, we changed our name from Statoil to Equinor. The biggest transition our modern-day energy systems have ever seen is underway, and we aim to be at the forefront of this development. Our name change supports our strategy as a broad energy company.

We changed our name from Statoil to Equinor on May 15. Read the press release.

Is our new name just an attempt at greenwashing?

If a company is to succeed over time, it must change and adapt at least as fast as its surroundings. We changed our name to Equinor because we’re going from being a pure oil and gas company to become a broad energy major. We will develop oil, gas, wind and solar power.

From oil company to a broad energy major

    Full Story

This is what changed us.

Some changes are so profound that they challenge us to find a new balance. As we go from being an oil and gas company to a broad energy company, it was natural to change our name.

Until recently, these people worked for Statoil. Now they work for Equinor.

Beate Myking, Senior Vice President, New Energy Solutions
Beate has worked with oil and gas for more than 26 years. Now she’s working on our windfarms in the United Kingdom, supplying more than 650,000 British households with renewable energy every day.

Abdelkarim Abbou, Platform Manager, Åsgård B
Abdel has worked for Statoil for 13 years on various offshore projects in oil and gas. For the last year and a half, he has been platform manager on Åsgård B, helping to supply millions of Europeans with the gas that they need.

Hans-Emil Arntzen, Automation Technician, Statfjord A
Hans-Emil has worked at Statfjord in the North Sea for more than 30 years. And oil will be important for the next 30, too. Hans Emil and has colleagues will continue to produce oil with the lowest possible emissions.

About our new name

Equinor. A new name for the next chapter of our story.

Change has been a constant for us from the very beginning. Mastering feats of engineering. Overcoming harsh environments and deep waters. Learning by doing. Becoming one of the world’s largest offshore operators.

Now we have a responsibility to change again. To find a better balance. To provide the energy the world needs and effectively fight climate change. We’re evolving from an oil and gas company into a broad energy company. Meeting the future with optimism. And a new name.

Equinor tells the story of a company that thrives on change, cheering for diversity, attracting the best talents, with innovation at its heart. Equinor embodies equality and equilibrium. It says how we relate to people, energy, the environment, the future. It captures who we are, where we come from, and where we are going.

Our North Star—our compass—reminds us that we’re on a journey, guided by values. Never settling for ‘good enough.’ Constantly searching for better.

We are Equinor.

Practical information about our name change

Our new visual identity reflects a sense of direction and purpose, with brand elements gravitating towards our new North star.

Our new colour palette is inspired by nature and our Norwegian heritage.

Say hi to change. Say hi to Equinor.

After the Annual General Meeting approved our name change on May 15, we began the process of implementing our name change as quickly and cost-effectively as possible.

  • Major office locations were rebranded first. We expect the rebranding of all locations to be completed by 2019.
  • Changes to our IT systems will be necessary following a name change. These changes will take place step-by-step and in a controlled manner.
  • E-mail addresses: All employees have new e-mail addresses (shortname@equinor.com). E-mails sent to a Statoil e-mail addresses will be automatically redirected to the equivalent Equinor e-mail address until 1 January 2019.
  • We intend to replace all current name and logo material with the new name and logo. We are working to ensure that the changes are done in a cost-efficient and sustainable way.
  • We will make smart choices to be cost effective, looking for opportunities to reduce waste, increase digitalization, and reduce costs
  • Please note that suppliers and vendors are not permitted to use the company logo to promote their relationship with the company. Permission to use the company name (as text) in a client list can be issued by the company representative of the contract/agreement.
