Less than three months after coming on stream the Johan Castberg field was producing at peak capacity of 220,000 barrels of per day. Every three or four days, cargoes depart from Johan Castberg. Each cargo may be worth around NOK half a billion, depending on the oil price. Norwegian suppliers account for 95 percent of the deliveries to the field in the operational phase.

Developing the largest oil producer on the Norwegian continental shelf

To ensure optimal resource utilisation, the project leveraged artificial intelligence to analyse field layouts and well paths. This technology has enabled faster decision-making and resulted in cost savings of NOK 130 million for the phase 3 project.

Oil discovery in the Johan Castberg area in the Barents Sea

The well was drilled in the Drivis structure on the Johan Castberg field in the Barents Sea. According to preliminary estimates the size of the discovery is 9-15 million barrels of oil.

Equinor is responsible for the construction phase and will be the operator of the two offshore wind farms. Onshore construction work is ongoing, fabrication of key components has started, while marine operations will start next year. Total power capacity of the projects is 1440 MW, enough to power 2 million Polish homes. Full commercial power production is expected in 2028. The individual project finance packages will fund the capital investment and the other expenses of each of the projects during the construction process totaling approximately EUR 7.2 billion.

Stop work order lifted, Empire Wind project resumes construction

Equinor will perform an updated assessment of the project economics in the second quarter. Empire aims to be able to execute planned activities in the offshore installation window in 2025 and reach its planned commercial operation date in 2027. Ripple effects from Equinor in Norway continue to grow

Equinor procured goods and services with a total value of NOK 142.6 billion, an increase from 134 billion in 2023. 93 per cent of this came from Norwegian suppliers located in 260 different municipalities. This resulted in an employment effect of more than 85 thousand full-time equivalents.

According to the plan Island Innovator will permanently plug 15 to 20 wells annually for a total of nine licences. These wells will no longer be used for oil or gas production. The rig will plug subsea wells at Heidrun, Snorre and Norne, among others.

Equinor is already one of the largest CCS developers worldwide, with ambitions to further mature storage licenses both on the Norwegian continental shelf and globally with expected nominal equity return as previously communicated. Equinor is working on several CCS projects in Europe and the US. These projects require ongoing collaboration between governments, industry, customers and regulators to enable large-scale CCS solutions.

The acquisition is in line with Equinor’s onshore renewables strategy of being a market driven power producer across select markets in Europe and the Americas.

Equinor presents 2024 Annual report

The strong financial results of 2024 also led to strong contributions to society through taxes. In 2024, Equinor paid USD 20.6 billion in corporate income taxes of which USD 19.7 billion was paid in Norway, where Equinor has the largest share of its operations and earnings.

Gas to Europe from Halten East

“We are starting up Halten East at a time where piped gas from Norway is in high demand and important for energy security. In a challenging cost and inflation environment, the project has been delivered both on time and within our cost estimate,” says Geir Tungesvik, executive vice president for projects, drilling, and procurement in Equinor. The estimated pay-back time for the project is one year.

The licensees’ assessment is that this is a commercial discovery, and they will consider tie-back to existing infrastructure or development together with other discoveries in the area.
