The world must remove carbon from the atmosphere to meet climate goals and the Paris Agreement. Technology-based solutions like Direct Air Capture (DAC) provide a practical pathway for industries and governments to achieve their net-zero ambitions.

At Equinor, we are developing a DAC solution designed to be safe, scalable, and affordable. Using a liquid-based approach and a low-temperature process, the system can operate entirely on renewable energy while unlocking economies of scale from pilot to industrial-scale plants.

  • Promising technology: Equinor has entered into what we believe is a very promising technology for large-scale safe, sustainable and cost-effective DAC solutions. Early phase testing has yielded results exceeding expectations.
  • Tech team: Our core team consists of specialists who are key architects of DAC engineering, chemistry and Intellectual Property development, supported by external technology partnerships.
  • Working with partners: We continue to innovate and mature the business case for DAC, actively seeking partnerships with private companies and governments to enhance our efforts.
  • Piloting: In collaboration with the UK government Department of Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ),we have successfully demonstrated a pilot capturing over 100 tonnes of COâ‚‚ per year, with peak performance reaching 180 tonnes per year equivalent.
  • Pathway: The technology concept unlocks a path toward a cost of capture below USD 200 per tonne of CO2 accounting for all associated and embedded emissions.

Built on decades of engineering and industrial experience, our team consistently innovates by enhancing absorber design, chemistry, and heat management. This commitment drives down costs year after year, transforming a new technology into a safe, affordable, and scalable carbon removal solution.
