Riga terminal inaugurated

September 3, 1998, 01:00 CEST

A new terminal for petrol and diesel oil in the Latvian capital of Riga was officially inaugurated by Statoil today in the presence of Norway's King Harald V.

Some NOK 115 million (about USD 15 million) has been invested in the new facility to obtain an overall storage capacity of 190 000 barrels in six tanks for refined oil products.

Initially intended to supply Statoil's Latvian service stations, the terminal will eventually deliver to parts of the other two Baltic states - Estonia and Lithuania.

The facility ranks as the most modern of its kind in Latvia, and meets high technical standards. It is run by nine local employees.

A vapour recovery system retains petrol fumes in empty road tankers through a closed system, rather than releasing them to the air. The vapour is recovered in a condensation process as a pure petrol product.

Established in 1992, the Latvija Statoil SIA subsidiary now operates a network of 29 service stations in 10 Latvian cities. These are among 71 Statoil forecourts in the Baltic states.
