Praise for Kalundborg

October 31, 2000, 08:00 CET

Danish labour minister Ove Hygum has praised Statoil's refinery at Kalundborg near Copenhagen for its efforts to combat accidents at work.

"With a willingness to pursue prevention, working environments really can be improved," he told the local Kalundborg Folkeblad paper. "The Statoil refinery in Kalundborg is a shining example of that."

Mr Hygum made his remarks in connection with a debate on the working environment now under way in Denmark.

According to a report from the Centre for Alternative Social Analysis and the Danish engineer's union, efforts over the past 25 years to improve conditions at work have been without effect.

However, the Kalundborg refinery has achieved good results from its work on health, safety and the environment over several years.

Refinery head Egil Sæl is pleased that the systematic efforts being made in this area are attracting attention.

"This is also an important part of our image with our employees, the authorities, our neighbours and our customers," he notes.

"We want to be a good and safe workplace, and intend to a be good enterprise in the Danish community."
