Fatal accident on crane barge

March 25, 2003, 00:15 CET

A 41-year-old Italian citizen died on 24 March after sustaining serious injuries 10 days earlier on Saipem’s Saipem 7000 crane barge, which is working for Statoil in the North Sea.

The man, a Saipem employee, was alone inside a container with a diesel generator, which produces electricity, when the accident happened at 17.30 on 14 March while the vessel was waiting on weather.

He was transported immediately by helicopter to Haukeland University Hospital in Bergen for an operation.

Statoil has established an in-house investigation team to identify the cause of the incident.

Saipem 7000 has been carrying out lifting operations for Statoil’s Vigdis expansion project in the North Sea, and is now installing the group’s Kvitebjørn platform in the same waters.
