Six finalists are competing for the chief executive's health, environment and safety prize (HES) which will be awarded on 3 December.
The prize is for employees or contractors with impressive results within HES. This year's finalists are the catering unit on the Statfjord C platform, the production unit for the Sleipner fields – both in the North Sea – and physiotherapist Joseph Odijk. The Lufeng 22-1 organisation in the South China Sea, the energy management project at the Kalundborg refinery in Denmark and the manufacturing company Statoil Lubricants Fagerstrand near Oslo have also been nominated.
This short list of six was drawn up from a total of 53 candidates. The prize will be awarded by chief executive Olav Fjell at Statoil's head office in Stavanger on Friday 3 December.
The jury sees the six candidates as having shown excellent results in line with Statoil's zero mindset. Eurest Support Services has run catering on Statfjord C for ten years with no lost-time injuries. The Sleipner production unit has succeeded in minimising emissions to sea and air by tackling the problem of acute emissions in a new and systematic fashion. Physiotherapist Joseph Odijk has identified measures that have reduced sickness absence in the production services/catering area. The Lufeng 22-1 organisation has achieved the best HES results ever for the region during the engineering and development phases. It has also operated for well over a year with no lost-time injuries. The Kalundborg refinery's energy management project has identified and implemented energy-efficient solutions that have reduced carbon dioxide emissions. Statoil Lubricants has succeeded in reducing its residual waste by developing a new system for waste management.
Last year's HES prize was awarded to the VOC project for its work to recover oil vapours, known as volatile organic compounds, in connection with shuttle loading. Energy analyses have shown there to be sufficient energy in VOC emissions from shuttle tankers to fuel one of these ships on a trip from Statfjord to Rotterdam and back.
