Norsk Hydro has again qualified for listing on the prestigious Dow Jones Sustainability Index. Hydro is on the worldwide index "DJSI World" for the fifth year running, and this year the company is also on the European "DJSI STOXX".
DJSI World lists a total of 317 companies in 22 countries that according to Dow Jones represent the top 10 percent of companies in terms of important principles for sustainable development.
The companies that have been considered for inclusion in the index cover 59 industries and 34 countries and are among the 2,500 largest companies listed on the Dow Jones index. DJSI STOXX has been drawn up along similar lines, but only covers European companies.
Hydro has qualified for the Dow Jones Sustainability Index every year since the index was established in 1999.
During the selection process, companies are required to fill in extensive questionnaires. Hydro has previously been assessed as an energy company, but this year chose to enter as an aluminium company as this business area had the largest turnover in 2002. Alcan was given first place in the aluminium section of the list, followed by Hydro and Alcoa in second and third places.
"Genuinely concerned"
"Hydro strives to operate as a sustainable industrial concern, and it is therefore very pleasing to be included again this year on this sustainability index," comments Hydro Aluminium executive vice president Jon-Harald Nilsen.
"The qualification requirements are very high, which means that Hydro's sustainability work is of the highest quality. I am particularly delighted to note the broad involvement this work has throughout the company. It is important for us to be included in these indexes, but the main reason for the work that lies behind our qualification is, of course, that we are genuinely concerned about the issues on which we have been tested."
