Record number of apprentices

January 12, 2007, 22:00 CET

Statoil will take on a record 134 apprentices at onshore facilities, platforms and office locations in Norway in 2007. Last year the figure was 119.

"In 2007 we're taking on a record number, despite the fact that this year, we will not have cook or security apprentices," says Else Sørstrønen Amundsen, training coordinator for the apprenticeship scheme.

The 134 young people will be spread over eight disciplines as automation technicians, electricians, industrial mechanics, chemical process operatives, office and materials administrators, laboratory technicians and crane operators.

The increase in the number of apprenticeships is greatest on offshore installations, with intake more stable onshore.

According to Ms Sørstrønen Amundsen, the Hammerfest LNG plant at Melkøya, northern Norway, will play a key role in the scheme. Five will be recruited there. Last year, Kaja KlÌbo Hjelseth started as the very first apprentice at the plant.

This year's intake will be advertised on Friday 12 January with a start date of 1 September. The apprenticeship period is two years in most disciplines.
"It means a great deal for the group to take on new apprentices," Ms Sørstrønen Amundsen emphasises.

"The scheme contributes to Statoil getting the experts required in the future. The large number of placements shows that we take a socially responsible role in that more candidates have the opportunity to take a trade certificate. We can't promise permanent employment in Statoil after the period is over, but apprentices form an important recruitment base for our operations units."
