The energy transition:
The defining opportunity of our time.

Does a future exist where we can ensure enough energy for everyone, while also being good stewards of our planet?

The world needs more energy — but it must be affordable, reliable, accessible. How will we do it?

By accelerating the energy transition — growing our portfolio in renewable energy, cutting greenhouse gas emissions from oil and gas production, and developing technology that accelerates decarbonization.

By the time the global population reaches 9 billion in 2050, our goal is to be a net-zero company: delivering the energy the world needs, without contributing to global warming.

That’s why we believe the energy transition is the defining opportunity of our time.

Offshore wind

Can a wind turbine generate more than electricity?

At Equinor, we’re planning to power nearly two million homes in New York with homegrown, renewable energy. But there’s more.

As a broad energy company with an ambitious net-zero target for 2050, we’re pursuing the development of offshore wind projects in the US and quickly becoming a leader in the country’s growing offshore wind industry.

That way we’re not only helping providing homes and industries with clean power and generating value, but also helping the US to meet its climate targets.

Empire Wind and Beacon Wind

The U.S. East Coast is one of the most attractive growth markets for offshore wind in the world, and these projects will deliver homegrown, renewable electricity to New York. They represent a game-changer for our offshore wind business in the U.S. and demonstrate our commitment to be a leading company in the energy transition. Empire Wind and Beacon Wind are being developed by Equinor and bp through their 50-50 strategic partnership in the U.S.

Oil and gas

The US is a core area for Equinor’s oil & gas production.

We are the 5th largest producer of oil & gas in the US Gulf of Mexico and our US onshore operations are Equinor’s largest international production outside Norway.

Onshore oil and gas

We are applying innovative technology to ensure that our onshore assets are producing energy safely and with the lowest possible CO2 and methane emissions.

Offshore oil and gas

We are taking our proven experience from the Norwegian continental shelf and elsewhere and applying it to our position offshore in the Gulf of Mexico.

Hydrogen & CCS

Hydrogen: a fuel of the future

Hydrogen and carbon capture and storage have the potential to play a critical role in decarbonization, including in hard-to-abate sectors such as cement and steel. We aim to create a low-carbon energy hub in the United States, leveraging our experience in key European hydrogen projects.

The Appalachian region, with an abundance of natural gas resources, industrial capabilities, and a skilled workforce, can help meet America’s energy needs while supporting a low-carbon future.

Innovation & Partnerships

We’re innovating with others to shape the energy of the future.

The need for a low carbon future poses new challenges that require partnerships, collaboration and innovative minds to create new energy solutions.

We recognize that we’re not the only ones with big ideas for sustainable ways to power the world. That's why we closely partner with industry peers, NGOs and leading academic institutions. Many of these partnerships are led from the United States, one of our key innovation hubs.

Lowering emissions

In the US we are ambitiously working to reduce our methane emissions towards a zero emissions future.
